Below is a list of responses to questions we get on a regular basis. If there is something you wish to know that isn't currently listed, please contact any of the gentlemen on the executive council page (positions, names, and e-mail addresses are all listed there).
What's the purpose of a fraternity?
A fraternity is a values-based organization that serves to mold men into something better; not better than others, but the best versions of themselves. Through a fraternity, men should understand the importance of academics/scholarship, leadership, philanthropy/service, brotherhood, and most importantly, ritual— the founding ceremonies and traditions that bond each organization uniquely and forever.
Do you haze?
Sigma Nu is unique in the fact that we were founded based on honor, which stems from our founders rebelling against the common practice of hazing at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. That principle still holds true today. If you feel that you have been hazed or need to report a hazing incident, feel free to contact 1-800-993-1869 or send an e-mail to: [email protected].
How much are dues and what are they used for?
Dues are usually between $350 and $450 a semester, with biweekly payment plans available upon request. The amount varies due to the number of members and the types of functions that may take place (examples of this would be an out-of-state conference, a brotherhood movie event, formals, etc.). The majority of this money goes to National Headquarters for insurance and initiate dues, with a smaller portion going to chapter needs like the ones listed previously or IFC dues. Candidate dues are $90 for candidacy and $220 for initiation costs (which includes lifetime membership recognition and the fee of the pin the member receives). Dues and donations can be submitted via our PayPal account.
What is your involvement in the community/on campus?
As a whole, we attend and raise money for events such as Relay for Life and the MS Walk. We also go into downtown Lynchburg to assist with the Lynchburg Exchange Club's annual Pancake Jamboree, and have worked heavily with Lynchburg Grows in the past. In the 2011-2012 academic year, Mu Chi adopted the Wounded Warrior Project as a chapter philanthropy. Individually, brothers are involved in the following: Student Judicial Board, Inter-fraternity Council, Student Activities Board, Bonner Leaders Program, Connection Leader Program, Peer Advocates for Campus Education, Psychology Lab Tutoring, Residence Life, Work Study programs, Study Abroad programs, Choir, Mu Phi Epsilon, Beta Beta Beta, Alpha Psi Omega, Lambda Pi Eta, Westover Honor Society, Order of Omega, Sigma Tau Delta, Omicron Delta Kappa, Psi Chi, Hillel (Jewish Student Organization), Intramural Sports, Club Lacrosse, Varsity Track, Disciples of Christ, and more.

How can I let the brothers know I'm interested?
That's a great question! In the academic year, our campus holds two official weeks of recruitment— one in the fall and one in the spring. Because our campus holds what is called deferred recruitment (check the compiled list of terminology above for more clarification!), freshmen are only allowed to receive bids in the Spring (or another recruitment period after their first semester). However, you can still attend the fall events and get to know us! Furthermore, if you ever see signs on campus advertising an event for us, you can also come to that! Finally, you can fill out the form below with your class year, a little bit about yourself, and why you are specifically interested in Sigma Nu. Thank you!
